California Knows How to Party:How the 90's Have Made a Comeback in West coast Fashion

So unless you've been living under a rock you've noticed that the 90's have made a major takeover in the latest fashion for youth, specifically the style portrayed in the Hip Hop aspect of the 90's from bucket hats,to Timbaland boots, overalls, bamboo earrings, windbreaker jackets, and not to mention the most common  trend from the 90's to see now, the flannel around the waist. And these are only a few trends that have shown back up in today's clothes. Especially on the west coast where 90's Hip Hop was really making a statement. When you think of West Coast Hip Hop you automatically think of Compton because of 90's artists such as NWA and Tupac, but what most people don't think of is how influential the 90's hip hop style was in Southeast San Diego.

Southeast San Diego is notorious for being the rougher more "urban" part of San Diego with its reputaion of being "gang-infested" and "impoverished". Being a residenent of said area I can safely say that it's not as bad as people make it out to be. (This part of San Diego is often refererred to as "ghetto" for no other reason than our population being mostly Black,Latino, and Philipino.) Southeast San Diego's highschool campuses, malls, and teen hangout spots have seen a definite increase in the ressurected trends of the 90's. If you walk unto a highschool campus in San Diego I guarantee you will see a display of oversized shirts, baseball jerseys, huge gold chains, bucket hats(So.Many.Bucket Hats.) and the reinvention of the iconic Adidas track suit.(Umm Run DMC anyone)

Not only are teens rocking these trends but celebrities are also embracing this sudden comeback. California's own Zendaya Coleman(as seen above) was spotted on the red carpet flawlessly wearing an outfit inspired by none other than Aaliyah's famous Tommy Hilfiger wardrobe. You can also see Zendaya rocking Raider gear much like NWA's Ice Cube in her music video "My Baby" .(Who said Raider fans can't be cute)

The 90's have also influenced todays beauty trends with dark matte lips and brown lip liner being all the rage now. It seems that makeup has gone back to that "gritty but pretty" look that was popular in the streets back in the day.It seems that everyone(including me) is loving the 90's right now.Social media is definitely playing a part in the 90's throwback craze with hashtags like "#youknowyou'rea90'sbabywhen..." and "#todayskidswillneverknow...". Due to the sudden increase in all these trends, along with my favorite, parchute pants we can safely say that the 90's is definitely back in style.

The Legion of Boom;True Fans or Bandwagon?

We all know of the smack down victory the Seattle Seahawks achieved on Superbowl 48,that game had fans and non-fans alike cheering for the great win. A number of those non-fans included native Californians. After the Superbowl, Seahawk jerseys started appearing everywhere from high school campuses to out at the mall. Stores that had never sold Seahawk gear instantly stocked up on jerseys, caps, and other accessories. Sure enough  people that never rooted for the Seahawks before the Superbowl began rocking Seattle gear as if  they were day 1 fans. Seahawk gear has become as fashionable as Raider gear(yes you read that right). Although the Raiders are one of the most underrated teams in the NFL, on the West coast Raider gear is very fashionable as it adds a gritty cool look to any outfit. Which brings up the doubt of the fan base of the infamous Legion of Boom, how many are just bandwagon?  California is very far from Seattle, so where the heck did all these Seahawk fans in San Diego come from? Because they sure weren't here  before the Superbowl.

In Chicano Park Under The Bridge

Chicano Park

Many know the classic oldies jam about being under the bridge of this culturally credited park, but Chicano Park is a hot hangout spot to chill with your friends or just to gaze at the beautiful artwork depicting Mexican heritage. This park is home to various murals of creative graffiti works and of course the skillfully painted bridge. So grab your friends ,some munchies, and head down to Chicano Park so you can chill "under the bridge".
